Are You Really Following A Healthy Eating Plan Post Bariatric Surgery

Here’s a simple list of questions to ask yourself:
Are you eating slowly enough? Do meals take at least 30 minutes to complete?
Are you still separating eating and drinking?
Are you chewing until your food could be spit through a straw?
Are you following a meal & snack schedule?
Are you forgetting or skipping meals?
Do you still journal when you need to get back on track?
Are you still implementing ways to work around your emotional eating?
Are you drinking adequate amounts of water a day?
Are you following some form of exercise plan?
Do you continue to avoid carbonation?
Do you regularly check-in with your surgeon’s office or support groups?
If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, you may need a refresher course on post-op eating practices for success! Most surgeons require their patients to go through extensive pre-op programs with dietitians, behavioral health therapists, nurse practitioners and sometimes exercise physiologists. These professionals help the patient learn the tools they will need for optimal success after weight loss surgery. If you did not receive education before or after your surgery, look into joining a program, so that you have the support you need for lifelong success. It is never too late to get help!
If you have learned healthy eating practices, but need to start making them a priority again, accepting personal accountability and putting a support system in place can make a big difference. Many patients say, “I know what to do, I just cannot seem to get motivated to do it”. When you’re in this mind-set, it may be the best time to go see your dietitian or therapist. Reporting our progress to someone can give us the motivation to get back in touch and start implementing the behaviors that will lead us to long-term success! Needing help and support is not a weakness. It takes strength to stay committed, show up for appointments and make your health your number one priority!
