A Holiday Bonus: How to Boost Your Energy

Recently I was watching a health show on television. They were offering suggestions about how to give your energy levels a lift. With the holidays upon us, this can be a perfect time to pass these tips along.  Think of it as a holiday bonus.

 

First off, when you go to sleep, leave your blinds half way open. When the sun flows in, your brain will slow its melatonin production and start generating adrenaline. So you’ll be awake by the time your alarm goes off. If you’re having trouble getting up in the morning, set your alarm fifteen minutes earlier than you actually need to, so you can wake up gradually.

 

Also make sure you follow your bariatric program's recommended food plan. Don’t skip any of your meals. Keep in mind, having breakfast will kick-start your metabolism.

 

Stress can put a damper on your energy levels. So do your best not to stress over holiday traffic. Understand that this time of year, traffic is usually heavy. That may mean you’ll have to give yourself extra time going to and from work to keep stress away. If you take public transit, this would be a good time to meditate to ward away stressful thoughts. Meditation is not recommended while you are driving however!

 

Take the time to become organized. Clutter causes stress, which in turn depletes your energy. But, each day, try to remove a little of that clutter. It’s best not to attack a whole room or office at once. Set small goals. For instance, you can aim to remove clutter for 15 minutes, three times a week. You always have the option to do it longer if you choose. By doing it this way, it is less stress on you.

 

Also, take time to exercise every day. Even a 20 minute walk after lunch is better than not doing anything at all.  If walking during the day doesn't work for you, then plan an early morning or early evening walk. 

 

Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Look at something 20 feet away from your monitor for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Doing stretching exercises at your desk is also a great boost to your energy.

 

Remember, nothing boosts your energy in the long run like taking care of yourself. You are absolutely worth it.
