5 Things. 5 Minutes. Make A Difference.

By Joe Nadglowski, OAC President and CEO

The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), the only nonprofit organization dedicated to giving a voice to those affected by obesity, makes it easy for you to make a difference in five minutes or less. As a post-bariatric surgery patient, the cause of obesity is close to your heart. Why not give back to the cause that has personally affected you? In this article, we will share with you five things you can do in less than five minutes to make a difference.

1. Become a Member of the OAC

Membership in the OAC is one of the easiest ways that you can give back to the fight against obesity. The OAC works on various advocacy initiatives on both the state and federal levels and being a member of our Coalition gives you the chance to be a part of these initiatives. When dealing with state advocacy initiatives, the OAC looks to our members in various states for help. We send out alerts when there is an issue in a certain state where we need our members’ help. This gives you a chance to have a direct impact on policy in your individual state. In addition, the OAC sends out alerts to our membership when we are working on federal advocacy initiatives. This gives you the opportunity to have an impact on policy issues that affect the whole country.

The OAC also has a number of educational materials that discuss obesity and childhood obesity as well as treatment options. As a member of the OAC, you would have access to these educational materials. Educating others about obesity is a crucial part of the fight against this disease. You can become a member of the OAC by visiting this website: click here.

2. Sign-on to C.H.O.I.C.E.’s Open Letter to Congress

Last year Allergan, Inc. launched the C.H.O.I.C.E. (Choosing Health over Obesity Inspiring Change through Empowerment) campaign, an educational initiative to help raise awareness of the critical need for greater access to and acceptance of all effective treatments to fight obesity. The OAC is excited to be a co-sponsor of C.H.O.I.C.E.’s Open Letter to Congress.

We invite each of you to sign-on to C.H.O.I.C.E.'s Open Letter to Congress, urging Congress to recognize obesity as a disease and support legislation to provide greater access to and acceptance of all effective treatments, including weight-loss surgery. You can sign the C.H.O.I.C.E Open Letter to Congress by clicking here. It only takes a couple minutes!

3. Contact your Elected Officials via the OAC’s Legislative Action Center

The OAC has an advocacy tool, the Legislative Action Center, which can be found on our website to help you locate and contact your elected officials with a personal message or a pre-drafted message. You can utilize this tool to send a letter to your elected officials on critical issues affecting prevention and treatment of obesity. The Legislative Action Center is easy-to-use and only requires you to enter your zip code to locate your elected officials.

The OAC updates the Legislative Action Center to reflect current issues that need immediate attention. You can check regularly to see what issues need your attention and then contact your elected officials using the pre-drafted message available or a personalized message of your choice. You can visit the OAC’s Legislative Action Center by clicking here.

4. Sign-up to Receive the OAC’s Free Monthly E-newsletter – Obesity Action Alert

The Obesity Action Alert is full of current obesity news in addition to news about the OAC. The OAC also includes any calls-to-action that we may need your help with in this monthly e-newsletter.
