Make Summer a Fun Time for YOU!

By Pamela Shenk, CHt

There’s no better time than the summer to get outside and do things. Maybe because it’s lighter longer, you tend to feel you have more time to socialize with family and friends. It just seems so much easier during the summer months to accomplish what you put off in the winter. This is the time of the year when you should drop all the excuses and garden, swim, walk, hike, and bicycle. Perhaps play baseball, soccer, dance, or even paddle a canoe. The list can go on and on, but it’s up to you to find something you enjoy and do it. Actually, there’s no reason why you can’t do it all…and make the summer count!

This is a wonderful time of the year to gaze at the stars in the evening and just dream. You can allow your mind to drift back to a time, before surgery, when you may have been uncomfortable. Perhaps the thought of sitting on the ground and gazing at the stars wasn’t even an option, before surgery, unless someone was around to help you up. Sometimes you forget how much you’ve accomplished since your surgery. When you allow your mind to drift back to how life used to be and compare it to how it is now, you realize how much you’ve accomplished. What a great time to begin a gratitude journal. There are times you get so busy with your everyday life, that you forget all you’ve accomplished and all you are grateful for.

If some of the weight has come back over the winter months; no time is better than the present to get back on track, stop the excuses and follow your eating plan. One thing for sure, you don’t want to beat yourself up. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. When you decide what you want, you should journal your thoughts. Writing it will give you something to go back to when you are feeling weak.

Enjoy the summer and take the time to do some fun things! Take the time to become more in tune with nature, take those shoes off and feel the earth beneath your feet. Take the time to Live, Laugh and Love.
