Keeping A Positive Attitude
By Kim Bertonica, RN
Many times when people are overweight they experience feelings of depression, anger and negativity. It is important to have a positive attitude not only toward your weight loss goals but toward yourself and life in general.
When people are unhappy they are more likely to feel that their weight is out of control and often turn to food for comfort. It is important to recognize and be aware of using food for comfort when you are stressed or unhappy. Many patients return for their first postoperative visit to the office and are surprised to learn they are feeling depressed over the loss of their relationship with food. When we are sad and depressed we are much more likely to feel unmotivated and uninspired. Keeping a positive attitude not only helps with weight related issues but with all aspects of life.
You may be wondering what you can do to cultivate a positive attitude. Stand tall, walk with good posture and smile- - others will smile back. Exercising will also help to improve your mood. Exercising with someone else will give you extra motivation and help you stay on track. And laughing can be a sure bet to be on your way to finding this positive mindset.
Life is hectic today. Take time for yourself, slow down, and enjoy the moment. We hear this often but this needs to be taken to heart. Take 15-30 minutes for yourself each day to exercise, meditate, journal and relax. This will improve your mood and help you have a positive attitude. You are important and worthy.
