Get Back To Basics

Have you ever run into challenges post op? Remember how elated you were when you reached your goal? Then, before long, life gets back to the way it used to be and you forget to eat a scheduled meal, or perhaps you didn’t allow enough time to eat at that slower pace.  Perhaps you’re following your doctor’s orders, but you’re beginning to fantasize about those ‘bad’ foods. Perhaps the dog, cat, spouse, children, work, or all of the above have now become more important than your own health, happiness and continued success.  If you can relate to any of the above, I’m talking to you!


When you feel like you have hit a fork in the road, take a moment and reflect back to the time you found out you had just been approved for surgery and how excited you were.  Then think about how great you felt when you released all that weight and the determination you had to follow your doctor’s protocol. 


Often, after reaching your goal you feel that life just can’t get better.  Without realizing it you begin to get complacent and perhaps stop measuring your food.  Possibly you skip a meal or aren’t drinking enough water.  Exercise…who has time to exercise. 


Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up.  We are human and sometimes life just gets in our way; but, it doesn’t mean you can’t get back on track. 

  1. First, step back and think about what has changed with your eating habits.  Are you drinking enough water and exercising?  Perhaps you need to begin a food journal, possibly start weighing your food again or making an appointment with your dietitian. 
  2. Second, reconnect with your doctor’s office to meet with the nurse or dietitian.  You know the program worked for you in the past, so take the time to see what has changed over the years and then go back to the initial program that was outlined for you. 


There has never been a better time than today to get ideas and recommendations for continued success.
