Is What You Are Doing Working for You

By Pamela Shenk, CHt

Are you getting what you need and want in life? You’ve probably made goals before intending to improve your life. That’s good. In fact, you should do it more than once a year at New Year’s. But if your goals from year to year remain the same, then it’s safe to say that what you’re doing is not working for you. You may have the right intentions, but what you’re doing isn’t working.

Do you ever feel that you’re all over the place, doing a million things at once and not completing anything? Do you get totally frustrated that nothing gets completed; feel like you’re running in place and then begin to feel like a total failure because nothing gets done?

If any of this sounds like you, stop. Take some time out of your day and figure out what really would make you happy. Dream big, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the money, don’t have the office or the staff, or whatever you think you might need to fulfill your dream. First, figure out what you really want and what makes you feel good. Once you’ve figured that out, take some quiet time each day to see it, feel it, and taste it. Make your dream as real as you can in your mind. By doing this, you’re letting your mind know that this is what you want. You don’t even have to be concerned about how it will work, just know that this is your desire. Also, your dreams are yours. It doesn’t matter how others feel about your dreams – they’re yours and yours alone.

By being aware of what makes you happy and what works for you, then everything else just seems to fall into place. It’s when you get so overwhelmed doing everything for everyone else, put yourself on the back burner and let your dreams die that you feel that you’re just ‘existing’ rather than living your life.

When you follow your heart and do what makes you happy, then it is so much easier to help others. You are the most important person in your life. By putting yourself first on the to do list, you might be pleasantly surprised to find out that everyone in your life, both personally and professionally, will be happier too.
