3 Ways to Avoid Holiday Food Temptations

By Barb Brathwaite, RN MSN CS

It’s the holidays. Your friends insist that you try the home-made holiday cookies. What do you do? Passing on a slice of cake is never easy, but what do you do when you are constantly being tempted by the situation you’re in or the people around you? Let’s be honest: resisting temptation is hard, even when you’re trying to eat right. If there’s one idea you can take from this it’s: you have to be prepared for whatever happens. And that requires planning and making smart choices. Here are a few ways to brace yourself for whatever life throws at you…

Reframe your thinking. You are in control. It is not a matter of deprivation when you don’t allow yourself that treat; it is a matter of choice. You are choosing better health and a better quality of life. You’ve made the decision to take control of your life and become healthier. Once you get in the habit of viewing temptation in a different light, it becomes easier to overcome.

Focus on what is most important in the long run: staying healthy!

USE Every TOOL in Your Toolbox

Use your support system when confronting a temptation.

Get in touch with what you are feeling. Are you feeling bored, angry, lonely, tired? Pick up the phone and call a friend or family member. The support will help provide understanding and strength when you feel weak. Plus, it may help you look at things in a different way.

Weight loss success depends on your ability to control the foods that enter your environment. If you don’t buy unhealthy, trigger foods when you go shopping, you reduce the chance that you will be tempted to indulge. If the trigger foods are not at home, you are less likely to be tempted.

Surround yourself with healthy food and healthy people. Creating a supportive, nurturing environment will help strengthen resolve. If you have toxic people in your life, get rid of them. Assert yourself. Take care of yourself. Negative people will affect your mental health and weight loss success.

Remember, making your needs a priority and caring for yourself will help you resist those temptations.
