Motivation Propels Us to Accomplish Our Goals

By Barb Brathwaite, RN MSN CS

Every year consumers spend billions of dollars on treadmills, bicycles, elliptical machines and more, trying to get in shape. But sad to say, the majority of these machines sit idle collecting dust in our homes.

Buying an exercise machine may help many people get started exercising, but very few actually stick with it. So, what can we do to keep our momentum going when our enthusiasm fades? The following strategies will help you find ways to stay motivated:

Think Positive

It is really quite simple. Visualize your goals in a simple, positive way. Remember, negative thoughts create destructive emotions and behaviors. They sabotage your motivation and can instill feelings of hopelessness and despair. Positive thoughts create constructive emotions and behaviors. The more you think positive, the more motivation you will have and the easier it will be to accomplish goals.

Use Your Support System

Supportive people will encourage you and listen to your fears and feelings. It is very helpful to find friends who share your goals of healthy living. Cooking, exercising, and shopping together can be very validating. Attending support groups can provide accountability which can be a strong motivation to stick with your weight loss goals.

Set Small, Simple Goals

Achieving small goals is very encouraging. When you break down your big goals into realistic steps, it’s much less overwhelming.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Lack of sleep can create a lot of stress in our lives and may attribute to obesity. Be good to yourself. But realize it takes a lot of mental and physical work to change habits.

Accept the You in the Mirror

Focus on the positives with acceptance and compassion and the healthy behaviors will follow. Really get to know and understand the you in the mirror.

Remember: We are not perfect. We all make mistakes and have setbacks. But instead of giving up after a setback, accept it and start again the next day. Lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight but it is well worth the effort. Keep it up!
