Top 5 Excuses That Are Keeping You From Exercising

By Audrey Turner, EP

We all have excuses not to exercise. The best thing to do before you get started with your exercise routine is to make a list of excuses you know will come up that hinder your workout routine. Then determine ways you will work around those excuses. Here are the top excuses I hear for not exercising:

1. I don’t live near a gym.
You don’t have to have a gym to exercise. Be creative! Walking, hiking, dancing, bike riding, and so on are all examples of how you can get your cardiovascular exercise. You can even do strength training at home by using soup cans or water bottles as weights.

2. I don’t have time to start an exercise routine.
Exercise needs to be a priority. Until you make it a priority it will feel hard to “make” time. If you can’t fit in a full hour then try to do 10, 15 or 20 minutes 3 times daily. It may be as simple as getting up and walking around for 10 minutes at a time.

3. I have never exercised before and don’t know how.
If you don’t know how to exercise, there are many resources available for you to use. Start out by setting up an orientation at the local fitness facility near you or read books and magazines. But it’s really not hard! Just make a commitment to get started!

4. I don’t have the energy to exercise.
Exercise is one of the best ways to increase your energy level without resorting to consuming pills or energy drinks!

5. I don’t have a workout partner.
Having an exercise partner can make exercising easier and more fun. If you just have to have someone with you, you can join local aerobic classes near you or hire a personal trainer. But remember, you need to take responsibility for our own health!
