2011 Walk from Obesity
By Joe Nadglowski, OAC President and CEO
The OAC and the ASMBS Foundation co-sponsor an event each year called the Walk from Obesity. This annual Walk brings awareness to the disease of obesity and raises funds to benefit research and education about this disease. This year, the National Walk from Obesity Day is September 25; however, Walks take place nationwide throughout the year.
The Walk from Obesity is an important event because it is the only national event that brings awareness to obesity and raises money for research and education. A portion of the funds raised go directly to the OAC and benefits the production of their various education materials on obesity, morbid obesity and childhood obesity. The OAC provides all of its educational materials free of charge to the public and is also involved in advocacy efforts related to obesity on both the national and state levels. Monies raised from the Walk from Obesity also fund the various research initiatives of the ASMBS Foundation. The ASMBS Foundation is a society for the metabolic and bariatric branches of medicine and is dedicated to raising funds to help support obesity research and to increase professional and public awareness of bariatric surgery and its role in treating obesity.
Another reason the Walk from Obesity is so important is because it brings together those who are a part of the bariatric community and those who are affected by obesity, or have family or friends affected by obesity. It is a great time to meet and socialize with individuals who are affected by obesity and others who care about fighting this disease. You can find a Walk from Obesity in your area by visiting the Walk from Obesity Website.
