5 Steps to Create a Zen Environment

By Pamela Shenk, CHt

Zen is the name of a religion or sect of Buddhism. In America, we have taken on the term the “feeling of Zen”. Zen Monks strive to seek “the Buddha within”. The “feeling of Zen” would be the feeling of becoming everything and nothing at the same time and a transition into tranquility and peace.

So how do we get this feeling of tranquility and peace (Zen) in our homes? Here are five ways to create your Zen environment:

1. Eliminate clutter.

It is very difficult to relax when your room is full of clutter. Once your room is de-cluttered, you’ll immediately become aware of how different the room feels.

2. Bring in natural light.

Blinds that modulate light can add to your Zen feeling. Also, natural light lightbulbs are very soft. For the evening, candles add to that feeling of calm.

3. Surround yourself with earthy colors.

Natural colors in soft tones induce a sense of relaxation and calm.

4. Display green plants throughout your home.

Green plants provide oxygen as well as have a calming effect. Bonsai trees are often included in Zen décor. Plus, green plants are visually appealing too.

5. Keep furniture simple and eliminate electronics.

Zen furniture has simple and clear lines and is made of natural materials. Should you like a TV in the bedroom, it would be best to have in a cabinet and no wires showing.

You can start with just one room. You just might find that you like it so much, that before long your entire home and garden have become Zen inspired. Think about it. Wouldn’t it be great to come home after a stressful day and immediately feel a sense of peace and calm?
