Creatures of Habit

By Pamela Shenk, CHt

We are creatures of habit… good and bad.
If you want change with anything in your life, it is important to immediately replace the bad habit with the good one… or the old habits with the new ones. If you just eliminate the bad habits, without replacing them with some good ones, it may leave a void. If that void is not filled, chances are the bad habit will come back or continue to occur.
A good way to realize a lot about yourself is to sit down and write a story about your life. Sometimes we get so involved with our every day routine, that we totally lose track of what is really important and what truly makes us happy. When you write ‘your story’ of your everyday life, you just might discover you are missing out on many undiscovered opportunities. By writing ’your story‘, you gain clarity on what is and is not working in your world. Put the items that are not working in a list. Next to each item, replace it with a positive change you would like to make. For example, if you want to eliminate ‘bad’ snacks, next to that you can write… healthy snacks. If you choose to get rid of a negative relationship, next to that you can write… freedom, self-respect and positive relationships.
Then rewrite ‘your story’ the way you would like your life to be. Make it achievable and read it every day. Set yourself up for success and stay focused on the positive. Some people say it takes 30 days to change a habit. When you make that original list of good habits you would like to achieve… prioritize them. Start with one or two new habits, once these are achieved, add more. It’s much easier to take baby steps to keep your focus on what you want to achieve. Remember, what the mind believes the body achieves… real or imagined. You can be a creature of good habits. Write ‘your story’ today!
