5 Tips to Make You Ready for the Beach

By Donna Carter, RN

There’s no getting around it, beach season is here. Don't worry—it’s not too late to get ready. Here are a few tips that will help you to kick things into high gear if you want to beach-ready for one hot summer!

Use Sunscreen. Purchase one that is broad spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays), is water resistant and has an SPF of 30 or more. Re-apply at least every 2 hours or more if you are swimming. Also get a lip balm that has an SPF of 30 or more and apply often to ensure that your lips do not burn.

Stay hydrated. Alcohol and caffeine cause dehydration, so remember to bring plenty of water or other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks with you and drink at least 8-12 ounces per hour while in the sun.

Limit sun exposure. There are many ways to do this while at the beach. Bring a beach tent or a sun umbrella to provide shade. Use a leave-in conditioner to protect your hair. Polarized sunglasses that block 99-100% UVA and UVB rays are a must to protect your eyes. A broad-brimmed hat will reduce sun exposure to your scalp and your ears. Long sleeved shirts or a cover-up help shield skin from UV rays.

Be safe. Pay attention to your environment while at the beach. Be aware of the tides so you don’t get stranded. Be alert to other swimmers, surfers, boaters. Take note of ocean life such as jellyfish, sting rays, or sharks. Respect lifeguards and swim only where they recommend. Swim with a buddy.

Bring a water-resistant beach bag. You will need this to carry all your beach wear including: towels, sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, cover-up, snacks, and water. Add some snacks, a book and you are ready to hit the beach.
