Learn To Love the New You
By Barb Brathwaite, RN MSN CS
Being successful after losing weight starts with showing yourself some love. In the past, you may have been generous at dishing out encouragement to those around you. But now is the time to focus on the 'new you' and the lifestyle changes required to take good care of yourself.
Three important steps in this process include:
- prioritizing your needs
- seeing the positive
- adopting an attitude of gratitude
Prioritizing Your Needs
You need to make yourself your number one priority. Your health and well-being has to be top of the list. Forget the notion that self-love means you’re being selfish. Self-love is about taking care of yourself physically and mentally.
Listen to your body – really listen. What is your body trying to say? What do you need?
One way of caring for yourself is by setting limits and saying “no” occasionally. Do you stand up for yourself and make your needs known? Treat yourself the way you would treat your best friend.
Seeing the Positive
Try working on some strategies to improve your body image. Body image is linked to self-esteem. Increasing your self-esteem will produce a more positive connection between your mind and body.
Compliment yourself. Start your day thinking of something that makes you special. Focus on the parts of your body that you like and appreciate. If you don’t love yourself, it’s harder for others to love you.
Join an exercise or dance group. Many patients feel more comfortable joining movement groups or walking programs at the mall. Do something you have always wanted to do but never dared. Self-confidence is sure to follow.
Adopting an Attitude of Gratitude
Appreciate the good things in your life. When you feel positive and grateful, your motivation will increase. Appreciate your body and be grateful that it functions the way it does.
Acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments you’ve made since since you have lost weight. When you appreciate yourself, you feel good which leads to making good choices in your life.
