Three Steps to Make Your Resolutions Stick

By Pamela Shenk, CHt

Here we are again… another year has bit the dust! I know, I say the same thing every year, but where on earth does the time go? Each year just seems to go by faster and faster. My mother always said the older you get, the faster the years go by. Once again, she was right!

So how many of you have made New Year’s resolutions?  How many of you say, “why bother?” You never keep them anyway. The reason many people aren’t successful with their resolutions is that they haven’t taken the time to sit down and think through what is really important and what is and isn’t achievable.

You may have some projects that you never finished last year. Perhaps, you have some totally new projects that you would like to accomplish this year that have been on the back burner, and you now feel that this is the year to start these projects. You may even have some goals and/or dreams that you never took the time to think through or, perhaps on some level, you believed you could never achieve. Well, now is the time to get serious and put your thinking cap on.

What would you really like to achieve for the year ahead?

The top ten New Year’s resolutions are to:  lose weight, pay off debt, save money, get a better job, get fit, eat right, get a better education, drink less alcohol, quit smoking and reduce stress.

If these are some of the things you would like to accomplish or something different, then:

Step 1: Make a list.

Step 2: Prioritize the list and make sure your goals are achievable so that you don’t set yourself up for failure.

Step 3: Tell your resolutions to a friend or family member that will support and encourage you. When we are accountable to someone else, instead of ourselves, we are usually more likely to follow through.

The New Year is a great time to get back on track and organize your goals, dreams and projects for the new you!
